Shadow of the Erdtree Bosses Ranked Divine Beast Dancing Lion Fight Strategy The Best Tips for Divine Beast Dancing Lion: Recommended Spirit Ash Summon: Black Knife Tiche Recommended Armaments: Black Knife Recommended Sorceries: Recommended Incantations: Frenzied Burst, Rotten Breath, Swarm of Flies, Unendurable Frenzy Other items: Opaline Bubbletear, Cerulean Crystal Tear The Blasphemous Blade is extremely useful for this fight. The boss is already weak to fire, and the weapon's unique skill has a chance to hit twice due to its size, which will provide extra healing. Melee Users The Divine Beast Dancing Lion is a large creature type with glowing green eyes and dual sets of teeth. Despite its size, this beast is fast and will start the battle by leaping towards you from a distance. One of its most powerful attacks is the Spinning Whirlwind, which it uses when it closes in on you. During this attack, the boss spins rapidly, summoning powerful gusts of wind that can knock you off balance and send you flying. This boss' movements are difficult to dodge at first, and utilizing a greatshield is highly recommended. When engaging the Divine Beast Dancing Lion, it is important to focus on the movements of its head, as this shows signs of its attacks. By closely observing its head, you can anticipate its next attack and prepare for it. This is especially useful when dodging its Grab Attack and other moves. The best moment to strike is right after the beast finishes its string of attack. It usually recovers after it finishes a move and gives you time to strike back if you're within striking distance. The common opening attack of this boss is the Lunge Attack where you see the boss jump high, and do a lunge attack to crash on the ground towards you. Then, it will follow up the move with a backflip kick. You can avoid this attack by slightly moving towards your left as the boss lands nearby, wait for a brief moment, and do a forward dodge roll as you see it kick off the ground doing the backflip. You can go in with a heavy attack if dodged properly, or do several light hits. This move is usually followed up by a common 3-Hit Combo where the beast will do 2 bite motions in quick succession from either side and end the move with a delayed bite. This attack can be difficult to dodge at first because of the delayed bite at the end, but once you get your timing correct, you can dodge the delayed bite by rolling to either side. Another combo that this boss can do is the 360 Combo where it starts with 2 quick bites in succession and ends with a delayed tail whip. The timing for this is similar to the 3-Hit Combo, but you have to watch out for the incoming tail whip. You can stay close to the boss as he does the 2 quick bites, and then roll forward for the tail whip as it comes around. When you're far away from the boss, this beast can utilize moves like Leaping Bite where it will sprint for a bit and leap through the air towards you, attacking you with a bite. This attack can be dodged by blocking it if you have a shield or rolling to the left to evade the attack. On the other hand, when you're fighting this boss up close, it will do the Spinning Whirlwind by spinning from its position and start blowing a lot of heavy winds, almost acting like a tornado. When hit, this attack will break your poise and send you back. You can identify this move as soon as you see the boss stand up straight. You can start running away from it to get out of the AoE. This boss can also do a Grab Attack where you will see it gnash its mouth twice before it lunges forward to try and grab you. To dodge this move, roll forward as the head closes in. If it hits, you will be grabbed, but like many other grabs, you can reduce the damage taken by mashing the light attack and block buttons. If you survive this grab, you will receive a negative effect that will heal the boss the next time you use a Flask of Crimson Tears. The amount healed depends on the upgrade level of your flask; a 0 flask will heal 5 of its maximum HP, and a 12 flask will heal 15 . This effect is removed after using a crimson flask, and will expire on its own after 30 seconds. Consistent heavy blows can break the Divine Beast Dancing Lion's stance, leaving its head vulnerable. When this happens, do a series of melee attacks to damage and deplete its health. Be prepared for its recovery, as the creature will often counter with a ground smash and use its moving whirlwind attack to create distance while doing damage. Upon reaching 70 health, the Divine Beast Dancing Lion will leap into the air and enter Phase 2. The Dancing Lion will always start Phase 2 by switching to the Lightning Phase. It is important to note that there is no pattern in which element the boss will use next, as its order will be random. While the elements of its attacks change in each phase, the base attack patterns remain the same from the beginning, with additional elements. For the Dancing Lion's lightning attacks, stay away from the lightning pools that are generated while he attacks. For the Dancing Lion's Ice attacks, you must be more precise with dodging as it uses icicles that generate frostbite. For its wind attacks, you have to watch out for its whirlwind attack which has a huge range. Otherwise, the wind phase will be the easiest phase to deal with as dodging the Divine Beast Dancing Lion's attack in this phase will reward you with more opportunities to strike back. Magic and Ranged Users Keeping range can be advantageous in this battle as the Divine Beast can take massive chunks of your health quickly. If the gold summon sign is available, summon Redmane Freyja to assist in dealing damage and more importantly, taking agro. Consider summoning Tiche or another quick spirit ash who can also lend a hand in dealing some damage and keeping the Divine Beast's attention away from you. The strategy from here is simple - keep your distance and use quick but effective spells like Comet. While Freyja and Tiche are keeping the Divine Beast busy you should be able to do some solid damage from a distance. If the Divine Beast turns its attention to you, dodge, heal, and do what you need to do until your counterpart(s) can help take aggro. You will know you've entered phase two when the divine beast starts using its lightning attacks around 70 health. These attacks have a large AOE and can do some real damage so stay alert and keep your distance. Be wary of the new projectile attacks, such as the Lightning Spear and tornado attacks. With help from your summons, this battle shouldn't drag out terribly long. The boss is weak to Rotten Breath and Swarm of Flies. Divine Beast Dancing Lion Attacks & Counters Attack Description Counter Leap This is the common opening attack where you see the boss jump high towards its target and crash onto the ground. Move towards your left as the boss lands nearby, wait for a brief moment, and do a forward dodge roll as you see it kick off the ground doing the backflip. You can go in with a heavy attack if dodged properly. Beast's Breath At long range, the Divine Beast emits a stream of wind. In Phase 2, it deals either Lightning or Magic Damage with added Frostbite build-up. Run to the side to avoid the attack. If this attack is performed while you're in melee range, you have to back up immediately before running to the side. 3-Hit Combo The beast will do 2 bite motions in quick succession from either side and will end the move with a delayed bite. Do a backward roll for the first 2 bites, pause for the delayed attack, and then do a dodge roll to either side. 360 Combo This attack combo starts with 2 quick bites in succession and ends with a delayed tail whip. You can stay close to the boss as he does the 2 quick bites, and then roll forward for the tail whip as it comes around. Whirling Dance The divine beast will rise from the ground and spin mid-air as it comes toward you, then it will kick the ground, and land nearby. After a brief period, it will breathe out a stream of wind as it spins around. You can counter this attack by running to either side or backing up as you see it rise from the floor, it usually doesn't hit if you do it this way. Do a forward roll as it lands nearby. Prepare for the incoming breath attack and jump at the last second before the projectile comes your way. Lunging Bite This attack usually triggers when there's a certain distance between you and the Divine Beast Dancing Lion. The creature will sprint for a bit and leap through the air towards you, attacking you with a bite. You can counter this attack by blocking it if you have a shield or rolling to the left to evade the attack. Spinning Breath This attack will usually trigger when the Divine Beast Dancing Lion is very close to you. The beast will spin from its position and start breathing out a stream of wind. Once the creature starts to stand straight, immediately back up until you're far enough from the damaged area. If the boss continues the move with the second whirlwind, dodge roll to either side. If you want a greater punish window, you can jump over the winds when they are traveling on the ground. This allows you to be right next to the beast when the whirlwind ends, giving you a great punish window. Maul The Dancing Lion stands upright and clamps its jaws twice, before lunging forward. If it lands, it will bite and thrash its target before throwing them to the ground. If grabbed, the next Crimson Flask you use will heal the Divine Beast as well, indicated by glowing red wisps around the player. Prepare for the move as you see the boss stand up straight and pay attention to its mouth. As it lunges forward, do a forward roll to dodge the grab attack. Side Bite This is one of its common attacks during close combat. While attacking the creature, it will sneak up a bite from the left side and thrust a bite towards your left side. With good timing, this can easily be blocked using your shield. You can also back up and dodge to the right. Ground Smash The creature cocks its head upward and smash it into the ground, before yanking it out violently. Due to the heaviness of this attack, you'll have to back up and dodge it when it cocks its head back. Double Bite Similar to the side bite, but after an initial bite, it will immediately do another in the opposite side. You can counter this attack by blocking it if you have a shield or dodging to the left and then to the right while backing up if you don't have a shield. Backflip The Dancing Lion will leap backwards before performing a backflip kick, knocking its target backwards. In Phase 2, specifically during the Storm Phase, this attack fires of a burst of wind. You can counter this attack by blocking it if you have a shield or backing up to evade the whip area. Phase 2 Phase Switch The Divine Beast rises into the air and roars, signaling its phase change. It alternates between Lightning, Storm and Frost, and has unique attacks while in each. The Divine Beast will always start Phase 2 in its Lightning Phase. Additional effects and follow-ups occur in each phase. The Lightning Phase has lightning striking the ground and the Frost Phase has ice erupting from the ground after certain attacks. Use this opportunity to heal or buff. Watch the transition carefully to see which attacks are in which phase to look out for. Lightning Spear The Divine Beast grasps a lightning spear in its jaws before hurling it at the target, dealing heavy knock-back and causing lightning to strike in the area it landed. Once the creature is about to hurl the lightning spear at you, immediately dodge to the left or right to evade the affected area. Divine Beast Frost Stomp The creature raises its foot and stomps the ground, summoning multiple ice shards around the impact area. Back away from the boss when it raises its foot, and perform a jump attack to dodge and punish. You can also dodge towards the boss, though the timing can be tight. Ice Side Bite The boss does its usual side bite attack but will now have an ice impact. With good timing, this can easily be blocked using your shield. You can also back up and dodge to the right. Double Ice Ground Smash The creature smashes the ground twice with ice shards spreading. Due to the heaviness and spread of this attack, you'll have to roll multiple times to either right or left to evade. Divine Beast Tornado During the Storm Phase, the Divine Beast may suddenly begin spinning in place, whipping up a tornado, before sending it toward its target. Run away while the boss charges the tornado to avoid being knocked down. Once you're decently far away, you can simply run to the side to avoid the tornado. Divine Beast's Wrath The Divine Beast will rise into the air and roar, switching to the Lightning Phase and hurling a lightning spear. Immediately after, it will switch to the Storm Phase and perform a spinning lunge before landing on the ground. Finally, it will switch to the Frost Phase and perform a delayed stomp, sending out ice eruptions in a large area around it. When the boss changes to the lightning phase, watch his animations to see if he falls and recovers like normal, or starts to hurl a lightning spear immediately after. After recognizing the attack, dodge to the side to avoid the lightning spear and make sure you're not inside the lightning pools. Roll forward when the boss lunges towards you; the follow-up attack should completely miss if you stand still, but you can run away or time a dodge just to be safe. Back away when it starts to roar, and then jump whenever the frost effect around its head disappears Divine Beast Dancing Lion Notes & Other Trivia The Divine Beast is based upon the Chinese cultural tradition of lion dancing, performed as a sign of good luck. If the player attacks Hornsent Grandam before the boss is first encountered, the introduction cutscene will have unique dialogue. Having survived the assault, she will have slightly different lines and her voice will sound more raspy. Dialogue Introduction: Spoken by Hornsent Grandam: O Horn-deck'd beast, from higher sphere deliver'd. Take root inside the tower's sculpted keepers. And perch'd within, we beg of thee; rise. Dance and cavort, cleanse all that thou wilt. Cruelty, woe, and those who plague the tower. Cleanse away the strumpet's vile progeny. Alternate Introduction: Spoken by Hornsent Grandam if she is attacked and knocked unconscious before the fight: O Horn-deck'd beast, from higher sphere deliver'd. We beg of thee to dance and cavort.
