Melee Users
Just like a Hippopotamus, this boss relies on the might of its bite and fights with its head.
At the start, the boss will rush towards you with Fanged Rush, a move that it uses to close the gap by charging forward with its mouth wide open.
As the boss gets near you, it will try to devour you and slam its head on the ground multiple times.
You can dodge this attack by sprinting to either side of the boss at an angle, then rolling away from its head at the last second.
Dodge earlier than you would usually for attacks because the AoE is larger than it looks.
If you get caught, you will be unable to move and you will be stuck inside its mouth.
If you happen to have remaining HP after this move, the boss will throw you up.
Aside from the aggressive bites, this boss will also slam its head which can throw you off balance and because of the size of this boss, it is better to dodge toward its body and away from the head.
This creates more distance from the head compared to rolling backward.
The Golden Hippopotamus is weak to heavy attacks, and you need to keep an eye out for openings.
The boss takes a few seconds of rest after it finishes a move.
If you happen to break its poise, be patient and walk towards the head, and press R1 to deal additional damage.
This boss can also do the Belly Slam attack where you see it stand on its legs.
This move has a long wind-up time and a slight delay before it slams its belly.
For this move, the best way to dodge is to roll on either side, and you will be able to retaliate with an attack directly on its head.
When the boss' health drops to 50 , it will create golden quills on its head and body.
One of the changes that this will make is that, whenever the boss does the Belly Slam, its quills will rain from above.
This will affect a small area around the boss and will deal damage if you stay there.
Make sure to roll backward to keep out of the slam's AoE, then run horizontally to the Golden Hippopotamus to avoid the quills.
The quills will also go away after a few seconds so be patient and wait for the quills to vanish and you can continue attacking the boss.
Lastly, one of the moves is the Golden Quill Air Strike which will rain down golden quills, or combine them with a spinning 360 attack.
This move can be dodged by rolling twice backward in quick succession.
The boss might follow up this move with another combo so make sure to pay attention to its next movements before you commit to doing any attacks after.
Magic and Ranged Users
Sorcery users will find great success using Shard Spiral, as the size of the boss will have him get him multiple times by each spiral, taking massive damage.
If you find the opening, Rellana's Twin Moons can do massive damage and reduce the boss' magic resistance, but it's generally too risky to use this attack.
The same applies to incantation users, who can cast Pest Threads to similar effect.
If you find the opening, Burn, O Flame is also a great option.
Golden Hippopotamus Attacks & Counters
Attack
Description
Counter
Fanged Charge
The boss opens its mouth wide as it charges towards you.
If the hit connects, the player is caught in a bite and the boss proceeds to slam the ground a few times while the player is inside its mouth.
After the slams, the boss will spew out the player.
Sprint at an angle to either side, then roll at the last second.
Anticipate this attack and dodge earlier than usual because of its range.
Belly Slam
The boss stands up on both of its hind legs and then slams its belly to the ground, damaging an area beneath him.
Roll out of the way to avoid getting damaged.
Don't underestimate the AoE of this attack; roll backward for safety.
Hippo Bite
The boss opens up its mouth and lunges forward a short distance to bite aggressively.
Roll toward its body or away from the head.
Hippo Rush
The boss pulls back its head for a few frames, then lunges forward to slam with its head.
In Phase 2, the boss will follow this up with a second biting lunge.
Roll to the side.
Golden Belly Slam
At about 50 HP, the boss will generate golden quills on its back and head.
The quills start glowing as it rears up on its hind legs and then slams its belly to the ground, damaging an area beneath it.
Immediately after it hits the ground, quills will rain down in an AoE pattern following the player.
This attack indicates the shift to the second phase and can be used freely after the transition.
If the quills aren't glowing when the boss rears up, it will be a normal Belly Slam.
Roll backward from the initial slam, then sprint to the side to avoid the falling quills.
Raining Quills
The quills start glowing.
The boss crouches before slightly rearing back onto its hind legs (lower than for a Belly Slam), then it drops to the ground causing quills to rain down in an AoE pattern following the player.
This doesn't have the same AoE shockwave as the Belly Slam.
Sprint to the side to avoid the falling quills.
Savage Spin
The quills start glowing.
The boss rears up slightly on its hind legs (lower than for a Belly Slam) and then quickly spins twice on the ground, shooting out a spray of quills towards most of the arena.
A cone to the back right of the boss is the only unaffected spot.
Sprint to the right as the boss rears up, then roll twice to the right as the boss curls into its spin.
Dive Roll
The quills start glowing.
The boss leaps into the air before slamming into the ground and rolling across the arena.
The boss can slightly change adjust direction while rolling.
Sprint toward the boss when it leaps up into the air and dodge toward the boss (preferably diagonally to the left or right) as the boss is about to hir the ground.
