If the player attacks the creature or approaches too closely for too long, the creature will attack the player as normal. Putting the torch away and pulling it back out again will cause the creature to cease attacking the player once more. Some enemies have scripted ambushes, where they attack even if a player has the Torch out (ex: Basilisks). They will stop attacking after the ambush, however.
