Retrieve the Fingerslayer Blade from the now accessible eternal city (the chest containing the item can only be opened once you have talked to Ranni at her Rise to join her cause).

The last step is to continue past where you fought the Baleful Shadows, through the Lake of RotDungeon to the Grand CloisterGrace, down to the end where a coffin can be interacted with by the edge of a waterfall.
This will take the player down to fight Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
It is after beating this boss that the Dark Moon Ring is actually required, as a seal will block further progress to the elevator to the Moonlight Plateau unless the ring is in the player's possession.
